Protecting your smile while playing sports is essential. Injuries to the mouth and jaw are some of the most common injuries suffered by athletes. Mouthguards can help protect your teeth and gums. If you participate in basketball, boxing, hockey, football, gymnastics, lacrosse, martial arts, racquetball, rugby, track and field, skateboarding, skiing and snowboarding, soccer, surfing, volleyball, water polo, weightlifting, or wrestling, it is recommended by the American Dental Association that you wear a mouthguard.
WHAT ARE MOUTHGUARDS?
Mouthguards are protective oral appliances typically made out of rubber that fit across the teeth. Mouthguards are worn during sports or other activities where the teeth may be at risk of damage. They are especially helpful for those with orthodontia or anterior bridgework.
THE BENEFITS OF CUSTOM-MADE MOUTHGUARDS
There are several types of mouthguards available on the market today. Store-bought products such as ready-made mouthguards or boil-and-bite mouthguards do offer some protection; however, both of these options are less protective and less comfortable than custom-made mouthguards. Made by our dental professionals using an impression of your teeth, your custom-made mouthguard is designed to fit your teeth perfectly. This prevents the risk of it falling out or causing discomfort. Plus, our custom-made mouthguards are manufactured with high-quality synthetic rubber for a high level of comfort and protective performance. Below, you’ll find several reasons why getting a custom-made mouthguard here at Issaquah Dental Health is the best choice for your safety and comfort.
Our custom-made mouthguards are designed to fit patients’ teeth perfectly and are manufactured with high-quality synthetic rubber, making them much better than store-bought alternatives at protecting against the following injuries and accidents:
- Concussions and brain damage
- Jaw dislocation and fractures
- Fractured or lost teeth
- Cuts or bruises to the mouth or face
- Stress to the neck and back
Since a custom-made mouthguard is constructed from a mold of your teeth, it offers a better, more comfortable fit than any store-bought mouthguard. Plus, the high-quality synthetic rubber used in our custom-made mouthguards is the most comfortable material available today. With a mouthguard custom-made by our dental team at Issaquah Dental Health, you’ll be able to breathe and speak easier, and you’ll hardly know you’re wearing a mouthguard at all.

Types Of Mouthguards
There are three basic types of mouthguards:
- the pre-made mouthguard,
- the “boil-and-bite” fitted mouthguard,
- the custom-made mouthguard
Be sure to pick a mouthguard that is tear-resistant, well fitted for your mouth and easy to keep clean. Also make sure it does not prevent you from breathing properly during use. If you wear braces or a retainer, it is imperative for you to wear a mouthguard. Our office can show you how to wear a mouthguard properly and how to choose the right mouthguard to protect your smile.
Many people are afflicted with bruxism, or teeth grinding. Some people may do this consciously during the day, but it is a larger problem at night while you are asleep. Grinding your teeth can damage enamel, wear down teeth, flatten your smile, cause jaw pain and/or irritate your gums. If you grind your teeth, a night guard should be considered. The night guard, which is similar to, but much smaller than, a mouth guard worn by athletes, provides a barrier between your top and bottom teeth while you sleep. All night guards are custom fitted for comfort and to allow for proper breathing.
